Milton's history is inseparable from the Broadkill River. English settlers first arrived in the area in 1675, and by the early 18th century a settlement known as "Head of the Broadkiln" had grown at the navigable head of the river — a strategic inland location that offered easy access to forest and farm products while remaining safely removed from the pirate and naval threats that plagued the bayfront towns. In 1807, the Delaware Legislature renamed the settlement Milton, in honor of the English poet John Milton.
Shipbuilding became Milton's defining industry through the 19th century. By the Civil War era, the town's shipyards were producing ocean-going schooners measuring up to 125 feet in length — an extraordinary achievement for a river so narrow that excavations had to be made on the opposite bank to receive vessels as they were launched. The golden years of Milton shipbuilding ran from roughly 1862 to 1892. Today, Milton's National Register Historic District preserves the Victorian and Colonial architecture that grew up around that industry, and the town is home to some of the finest 19th-century residential architecture in Sussex County.
Milton's Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1982. The district includes four "Governor's Houses" — homes once occupied by men who served as governors of Delaware. King's Ice Cream at Union and Broad Street, operating in the oldest commercial building in continuous use in Sussex County, has been a Milton institution for generations.
