Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore product lines — walls, trim, ceilings, and exterior — explained by a working Delaware painter with real-world recommendations you can actually use.

Start Here: Sheen Guide
Scroll

Choosing the right paint is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your home — and one of the most confusing. Walk into any paint store and you're immediately confronted with dozens of product lines, each claiming to be the best. As a professional painter working throughout Sussex County, Delaware, I've applied every major product line in real homes. This guide cuts through the marketing noise and gives you straight answers.

We cover both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore — interior walls, trim and cabinets, specialty products, ceilings, and exterior. You'll find sheen recommendations, an interactive LRV tool, flip cards with product specs, trim paint comparisons, and a full comparison table. Whether you're painting a bedroom yourself or hiring a contractor, this guide gives you the knowledge to make the right call.

The Paint Sheen Guide

Sheen affects how light bounces off your walls — and how well the paint holds up to cleaning. Here's how to match the right finish to every room in your home.

Flat
0–2% SHEEN
Zero light reflection — the most forgiving finish for touch-ups. Because there is no sheen to "flash," a touch-up spot blends in almost invisibly. Maximum hide of surface imperfections: nail pops, texture variations, old patches, and drywall repairs disappear. The tradeoff is washability — scrubbing can burnish (create shiny spots) or lift the film. Best for low-traffic adult spaces and ceilings.
Living RoomsMaster BedroomsDining RoomsCeilings
⭐ Best for touch-up-friendly walls & rentals
Matte
2–5% SHEEN
A step above flat — slightly more washable while still hiding imperfections well. Emerald Matte falls in this range. Still very touch-up friendly compared to eggshell or satin, but the very slight sheen means a touch-up may show under raking light if the paint has aged significantly. The sweet spot for homeowners who want a flat look with a little more durability than true flat.
Living RoomsBedroomsHome OfficesAdult Spaces
⭐ Best of both worlds — hide + washability
Eggshell
A subtle, soft sheen — like the surface of an eggshell. Offers a good balance between hiding imperfections and being washable. The most versatile finish for family homes. You can wipe down crayon marks and scuffs without damaging the paint film.
Family RoomsKids' RoomsHallwaysHome Offices
⭐ Best all-around choice for families
Satin
A smooth, pearl-like finish that's noticeably shinier than eggshell. Highly washable and moisture-resistant — excellent for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. The higher sheen will show surface imperfections more readily, so proper prep work is essential.
BathroomsKitchensLaundry RoomsMudrooms
⭐ Go-to for bathrooms & kitchens
Semi-Gloss
A clearly shiny finish that's very durable and easy to clean. The standard choice for trim, doors, and cabinetry. Highlights architectural details beautifully. On walls, best reserved for high-moisture areas — it will show every imperfection on a large flat surface.
Trim & DoorsCabinetsBaseboardsCrown Molding
High-Gloss
The shiniest, most durable finish. Creates a hard, lacquer-like surface that's extremely washable and moisture-resistant. Reserved for specialty applications — front doors, furniture, and cabinetry where a dramatic, high-end look is desired. Requires meticulous prep.

Light and airy white interior room with matte walls

Light, Airy Interiors: The Case for Matte White

Nothing opens up a space like a well-chosen white or off-white in a flat or matte finish. The key is selecting a white with the right undertone for your light conditions — warm whites (creamy, yellow-leaning) work beautifully in south-facing rooms with warm afternoon light, while cooler whites (blue or gray undertones) complement north-facing rooms and modern spaces.

In Delaware's coastal homes, I frequently use Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008, LRV 82) and Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17, LRV 85.4) — both are warm, approachable whites that feel bright without being stark. Always test a large swatch in your actual space before committing.

Dark moody bedroom with deep navy walls

Dark & Moody: Making Bold Colors Work

Deep, saturated colors create spaces that feel dramatic, sophisticated, and deeply personal. The key to success with dark colors is choosing a paint with superior hide (AURA or Emerald), using a tinted primer to reduce the number of finish coats, and selecting the right sheen.

For dark walls, I recommend matte or flat finish — it makes the color feel richer and more velvety, and it hides the slight texture variations that are more visible under dark paint. Avoid satin or semi-gloss on dark walls unless you specifically want a dramatic, reflective effect.

Popular dark colors for Delaware homes: BM Hale Navy (HC-154), Black Beauty (2128-10), and SW Tricorn Black (SW 6258) for bold accent walls.

Interior Trim Paint: The Full Breakdown

Trim, doors, and cabinets demand a different kind of paint than walls — one that cures hard, levels smooth, and holds up to daily contact. Here's how the two best options compare.

SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel

Sherwin-Williams · Water-Based Urethane Enamel

This is my personal go-to for trim, doors, and cabinets. The urethane component — not found in standard acrylic paints — is what sets it apart. It cures to an exceptionally hard, chemical-resistant surface that holds up to daily contact, cleaning products, and the wear and tear of high-use areas.

Emerald Urethane resists yellowing better than traditional oil-based coatings, recoats in about 4 hours, and is rated for both interior AND exterior use — making it ideal for front doors, exterior trim, and any surface that sees both indoor and outdoor conditions. In my experience, it's the most durable trim paint available in a water-based formula.

⭐ My Personal Recommendation

Benjamin Moore ADVANCE

Benjamin Moore · Waterborne Alkyd Enamel

ADVANCE is Benjamin Moore's flagship trim and cabinet paint — a waterborne alkyd that mimics the behavior of traditional oil-based paint while cleaning up with water. Its defining characteristic is the intentionally long 16-hour dry time between coats, which allows the paint to self-level to an exceptionally smooth, factory-like finish with minimal brush marks.

ADVANCE cures rock-hard and is the preferred choice of many cabinet painters who spray their work, because the leveling is second to none. It does have a slight tendency to yellow over time in areas with low UV exposure (inside cabinet interiors, for example). For interior-only applications where you have the time and want the smoothest possible sprayed finish, ADVANCE is a legitimate contender.

🪟

The Verdict: Emerald Urethane vs. ADVANCE

Both are excellent products and you can't go wrong with either. That said, Emerald Urethane is my recommendation for most trim and door work. The urethane chemistry gives it a hardness and chemical resistance that standard alkyds — including ADVANCE — don't quite match. The 4-hour recoat time means you can complete a door or a set of trim in a single day. And the fact that it works on exterior surfaces too makes it genuinely versatile.

Where ADVANCE has the edge: if you're spraying kitchen cabinets and want the absolute smoothest possible finish, ADVANCE's 16-hour open time allows it to level to near-perfection. Some professional cabinet painters swear by it for that reason. But for brushed or rolled trim, doors, and most cabinet work, Emerald Urethane wins on durability, speed, and versatility.

Other Trim Paint Options Worth Knowing

🪟
SW Emerald (Wall Paint) for Trim
Premium — Interior/Exterior
Standard Emerald is available in semi-gloss and can be used on trim and doors when Emerald Urethane isn't available or when you want to match the same product line throughout a room. Not as hard as Urethane, but still a very durable, self-priming finish. A solid choice for trim in lower-traffic areas.

BM Regal Select for Trim
Premium — Interior
Regal Select in semi-gloss is a capable trim paint for lower-traffic applications. It's washable, durable, and available in BM's full color range. Not as hard-curing as ADVANCE or Emerald Urethane, but a practical choice when you're already using Regal Select on the walls and want to keep the same brand throughout. Good value at the premium tier.

Pro Recommendation

Ceiling Paint: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Many builders and some contractors use Painter’s Edge or ProMar 400 on ceilings. The problem? Those paints fade unevenly over time. When you try to touch up a spot a couple years later, the patch shows. You end up repainting the whole ceiling. That’s why using a quality dedicated ceiling paint matters: paint it right once, and touch-ups are seamless.

Ceiling paint is formulated with a thicker consistency that clings to the roller and minimizes drips. The ultra-flat finish eliminates glare and hides roller marks that would be visible under any sheen. And the high-hiding formula covers water stains, smoke marks, and old texture in fewer coats.

  • Ultra-flat finish eliminates glare and hides roller marks
  • High-hiding formula covers stains and imperfections
  • Thick consistency minimizes spatter and drips
  • Dries to a consistent bright white that makes rooms feel taller
  • Specifically engineered for overhead application

My Personal Recommendation

I use Sherwin-Williams Premium Ceiling Paint on virtually every project. It has excellent hide, applies smoothly, and dries to a consistent bright white that makes every room feel cleaner and more finished. I've tried other ceiling paints over the years — this one consistently delivers the best results. Benjamin Moore's Waterborne Ceiling Paint is also excellent if you're committed to the BM ecosystem.

Accent Walls Done Right

A well-executed accent wall can transform a room without overwhelming it. The key is choosing the right wall, the right color, and the right finish — then executing it flawlessly.

Navy blue accent wall in modern living room
Navy Accent — Bold & Sophisticated
Teal accent wall in bedroom
Teal Accent — Coastal & Calming
Warm orange accent wall
Warm Accent — Energetic & Inviting

Accent Wall Rules from a Professional Painter

The most common accent wall mistake is choosing the wrong wall. The accent wall should be the focal wall — the first wall you see when you enter the room, or the wall behind the main furniture piece (bed headboard, sofa, fireplace). Never paint a side wall as an accent; it creates visual imbalance.

For color selection, the accent color should relate to the room's existing palette — either a deeper version of the wall color, or a complementary hue from the color wheel. For sheen: matte makes the color feel richer and more sophisticated. I rarely recommend satin or higher on accent walls — the reflectivity can look garish in certain lighting conditions.

Both brands make excellent paint. The right choice depends on your project, budget, and personal preference.

Exterior Paint: Sherwin-Williams & Benjamin Moore

Exterior paint faces a completely different set of demands than interior — UV exposure, moisture, temperature swings, and in Delaware's case, coastal salt air and humidity. Here's a straightforward breakdown of the best exterior options from both brands.

Sherwin-Williams Exterior

SW's exterior lineup follows a similar quality ladder to their interior products. For Delaware's coastal climate, I recommend going premium — the extra cost pays for itself in longevity and reduced maintenance.

Exterior Paint in Delaware's Coastal Climate

Delaware's coastal environment — salt air, high humidity, and temperature swings — is harder on exterior paint than most inland climates. This is not the place to cut corners on paint quality. I recommend going premium on any exterior job in Sussex County: SW Emerald Rain Refresh or BM AURA Exterior for siding and exterior surfaces, and SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel for exterior trim, doors, and shutters. The extra cost per gallon is minimal compared to the labor cost of repainting in 5 years instead of 10.

Paint Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions I hear most often from Delaware homeowners.

For living rooms and bedrooms, flat or matte finish is ideal. It hides surface imperfections and creates a warm, sophisticated look. I personally recommend matte for most adult living spaces. If you have young kids or pets, step up to eggshell for easier cleaning.
Eggshell or satin is the right call for most bathrooms. Satin holds up better to moisture and scrubbing. For a premium matte look in a bathroom, Benjamin Moore AURA Bath & Spa is the only flat paint on the market that can be scrubbed and resists humidity — it's a fantastic product.
Both are excellent, but Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is my personal preference. The urethane formula cures harder, resists chemicals and scuffs better, and recoats in 4 hours vs ADVANCE's 16. It also works on exterior doors and trim. BM ADVANCE has a slight edge on leveling for sprayed cabinet work, but for most trim and door applications, Emerald Urethane wins on durability, speed, and versatility.
Sherwin-Williams Premium Ceiling Paint is my go-to for every ceiling job. It's ultra-flat, has excellent hide, and dries to a consistent bright white that makes rooms feel taller. The flat finish eliminates glare and hides roller marks. I use it on virtually every project.
LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value — a scale from 0 (pure black, absorbs all light) to 100 (pure white, reflects all light). A color's LRV determines how bright or dark a room will feel. Colors above 70 LRV make spaces feel open and airy; below 50 LRV creates drama and coziness. Always check LRV before committing to a color.
Delaware's coastal humidity and salt air demand a premium exterior paint. SW Emerald Rain Refresh is my top recommendation — it actively repels dirt and water, resists mildew, and holds up exceptionally well in humid coastal conditions. BM AURA Exterior is an equally strong choice with outstanding fade resistance. For trim and doors, SW Emerald Urethane is the best option on either brand's roster.
Yes. Emerald is self-priming, covers in fewer coats, and lasts 15-20 years with proper prep. When you factor in the cost of labor for a repaint, the extra $20–30 per gallon for Emerald vs. a mid-tier paint is a very smart investment. Emerald Symmetry is the newest top-tier SW option with added sustainability credentials — worth considering for premium projects.
AURA features Color Lock Technology for richer, more durable color and better coverage on dramatic color changes. It's the better choice for bold, saturated, or dark colors. Regal Select is the premium workhorse — washable even in matte, more affordable, and excellent for most rooms. For standard colors and typical residential use, Regal Select is the better value. For dramatic color changes or the highest color fidelity, AURA is worth the premium.
Most premium paints (AURA, Emerald, Regal Select) cover in two coats over a properly primed surface. For dramatic color changes — going from white to dark navy, for example — use a tinted primer plus two finish coats. Never try to cover in one thick coat; you'll get runs, poor adhesion, and uneven sheen. Patience and proper coats always produce better results.
It depends on the situation. For previously painted surfaces in good condition with a similar color, a self-priming premium paint (Emerald, AURA, Regal Select) can often go directly on the wall. For new drywall, bare wood, dramatic color changes, stains, or water damage, always prime first. A proper primer is the foundation of a lasting paint job — skipping it is the most common cause of paint failure I see in the field.
No. The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams line sold at Lowe's is a retail-grade product with a different formulation than the professional lines sold at SW stores. Sherwin-Williams' flagship products — Emerald, Duration, Emerald Urethane, SuperPaint, and ProMar — are exclusive to Sherwin-Williams stores and are not available at Lowe's, Home Depot, or any big box retailer. If you want the real thing, go to a Sherwin-Williams store.
Behr Marquee is a solid paint for DIY projects and is one of the better options available at a big box store. It covers well and is reasonably durable. That said, it doesn't match the longevity, coverage, or chemical resistance of Sherwin-Williams Emerald or Benjamin Moore AURA. For a professional repaint or any project where you want the best result, I'd always choose SW or BM from a dedicated paint store. For a quick DIY touch-up or a rental property, Behr Marquee is a fair choice.

The cheapest option is almost always the most expensive option. Here’s the math — and the real-world evidence — that every homeowner, landlord, and property manager needs to understand.

“The Cheapest Option Is Almost Always the Most Expensive Option.”

Most landlords and property managers reach for the cheapest paint on the shelf. It’s understandable — lower upfront cost feels like savings. But budget paint fades unevenly, doesn’t touch up cleanly, and forces you to repaint entire walls (or entire rooms) when you could have just touched up a drywall repair. When you factor in labor, that “cheap” paint job ends up costing two to three times more over a 5–10 year period.

The Budget Paint Problem
  • Fades unevenly — lower pigment load means color shifts over time, and areas with more sunlight or traffic fade faster than others
  • Touch-ups flash — when you dab fresh paint on an aged budget wall, the sheen and color don’t match. The repair spot stands out more than the original damage
  • Batch variation matters more — even if you have the exact color code, a new batch of cheap paint mixed years later will look noticeably different on a faded wall
  • Eggshell/satin sheens are especially problematic — the sheen level itself fades, so a touch-up with fresh paint at the same sheen looks shinier than the surrounding wall
  • Forces full-wall repaints — instead of a 20-minute touch-up, you’re rolling an entire wall (or room) to get a consistent look
The Premium Paint Advantage
  • Higher pigment density — more pigment per gallon means richer, more stable color that holds its tone for years longer
  • Better binder chemistry — premium binders (urethane, acrylic) cure harder, resist scuffs, and don’t break down as fast under UV and humidity
  • Flat finish = touch-up friendly — with zero sheen to flash, a touch-up on a premium flat wall blends in almost invisibly, even years later
  • Self-priming — Emerald and AURA don’t require a separate primer coat on most surfaces, saving labor time and material cost
  • Fewer coats — premium paints typically cover in two coats vs. three or more for budget paint, reducing labor on every job
Why Ceiling Paint Matters — And Why You Should Never Use Wall Paint on Ceilings

Many builders and some contractors use Painter’s Edge or ProMar 400 on ceilings. Here’s why that’s a problem: wall paints, even flat ones, are not formulated to dry to the same consistent flat-white finish as a dedicated ceiling paint. When you come back a couple years later to repair a water stain or patch a drywall crack, you can’t just roll a section of ceiling with the same wall paint and expect it to match. The original paint has faded, and the new paint will be noticeably brighter.

Dedicated ceiling paints — like Sherwin-Williams Premium Ceiling Paint — are specifically engineered to dry to a consistent, uniform flat white that blends on touch-up far better than wall paint. The formula is thicker (less splatter), dries faster, and the ultra-flat finish hides roller marks and repairs.

The bottom line: Use ceiling paint on ceilings. Always. And write down what you used — because even ceiling paints vary between brands and product lines, and knowing what’s on your ceiling is the only way to guarantee a clean touch-up years later.

The Rental Property Case for Premium Paint

Rental properties get painted with cheap paint more often than any other type of property. Landlords and property management companies see the lower price per gallon and make the logical-seeming decision. But here’s what actually happens over a 5–10 year rental cycle:

Budget Paint Scenario (5 years)
  • Year 1: Looks fine
  • Year 2–3: Starts to fade, especially near windows
  • Year 3: Tenant moves out, drywall repair needed
  • Touch-up attempt fails — color doesn’t match
  • Must repaint entire wall (or room)
  • Year 5: Full repaint required anyway due to fading
  • Result: 2 full paint jobs in 5 years
Premium Paint Scenario (5 years)
  • Year 1: Looks excellent
  • Year 2–3: Still holding color well
  • Year 3: Tenant moves out, drywall repair needed
  • Touch-up with same color in flat Emerald — blends cleanly
  • No full repaint needed
  • Year 5: Walls still look good, spot touch-ups only
  • Result: Zero full repaints in 5 years
My recommendation for rental properties: Sherwin-Williams Emerald in flat finish, or Benjamin Moore Regal Select in matte. Both are touch-up friendly, hold their color for years, and will save you significantly more in labor costs than the price difference per gallon. For ceilings: always use a dedicated ceiling paint — SW Premium Ceiling Paint or BM Waterborne Ceiling Paint.
The Truth About Sheen and Touch-Ups

Here’s something most people don’t know until it’s too late: the higher the sheen, the harder it is to touch up — regardless of the paint brand. This is a physics problem, not a product quality problem.

When you apply fresh paint to a small area on an aged wall, the new paint has a slightly different sheen level than the surrounding aged paint. On a flat finish, this difference is nearly invisible. On eggshell, it’s noticeable under certain light. On satin, it’s very visible. On semi-gloss, you almost always have to repaint the entire wall.

SheenTouch-Up EaseWhat to Expect
Flat (0–2%)ExcellentBlends almost invisibly, especially with premium paint. Best choice for touch-up-critical applications.
Matte (2–5%)Very GoodUsually blends well. May show slightly under raking light on very aged walls.
Eggshell (5–10%)FairNoticeable under direct or raking light, especially after 2+ years of aging. May require rolling the full wall.
Satin (10–25%)PoorAlmost always requires repainting the entire wall. The sheen difference is too visible to hide with a spot touch-up.
Semi-Gloss / GlossVery PoorFull wall repaint required in virtually all cases. Only exception: trim and doors where the entire surface is being recoated.

Where You Buy Paint Matters More Than You Think

Not all paint stores are created equal — and neither are the products they carry. Here's what every homeowner should know before walking into a store.

Fun Fact

Benjamin Moore is a Berkshire Hathaway Company

In 2000, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway acquired Benjamin Moore & Co. for approximately $1 billion. The deal closed January 1, 2001. Buffett personally appeared in a video sent to BM employees after the acquisition — a sign of how much he valued the brand. Benjamin Moore remains headquartered in Montvale, NJ and continues to operate as an independent subsidiary. So when you buy BM paint, you're buying from one of the most respected companies in American business history.

Fun Fact

Sherwin-Williams is the World's Largest Paint Company

Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) is publicly traded and one of the largest companies in the coatings industry globally. In 2017, SW acquired Valspar Corporation for $11.3 billion — adding Valspar, Cabot, and other brands to its portfolio. SW also owns the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams line sold at Lowe's. The company operates over 4,900 company-owned stores across North America.

Benjamin Moore sells exclusively through independent authorized dealers — not big box stores. BM's dealer model is intentional — it ensures knowledgeable staff and consistent quality control.

Lowe's

Valspar & HGTV Home by SW

Lowe's carries two Sherwin-Williams-owned brands: Valspar (acquired by SW in 2017 for $11.3 billion) and HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. Important: the HGTV Home line is a retail-grade formulation — it is not the same product as Emerald or Duration sold at SW stores. It uses different ingredients and a different base formula. Good for budget projects, but not a substitute for the professional lineup.

~ Valspar (SW-owned, mid-tier)
~ HGTV Home by SW (retail grade, not pro grade)
No Emerald, Duration, or ProMar
No Benjamin Moore products
Home Depot

Behr, PPG & Glidden

Home Depot's paint lineup is anchored by Behr (an independent brand sold exclusively at HD — their flagship is Behr Marquee), PPG (PPG Timeless is their premium line), and Glidden (owned by PPG Industries, the budget-friendly option). Home Depot does not carry Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore products. Behr Marquee is a solid mid-tier paint and a reasonable choice for DIY projects, but it doesn't match the durability or coverage of Emerald or AURA.

PPG Timeless (premium option)
~ Glidden (PPG-owned, budget tier)
No Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore

My Recommendation: Always Buy from a Dedicated Paint Store

For any project where the result matters — a full room repaint, trim work, cabinets, or exterior — buy your paint from a Sherwin-Williams store or an authorized Benjamin Moore dealer. The professional-grade formulations sold there are genuinely different from what you find at big box stores. The extra cost is minimal, the quality difference is real, and the staff can actually help you choose the right product for your specific situation. Save the big box stores for primer, painter's tape, and drop cloths.
