What We Use

Products & Materials

The quality of a finished job starts with the quality of what goes into it. Here are the professional-grade products we trust on every project.

Most contractors don't tell you what products they use — and there's usually a reason for that. We believe transparency builds trust. Every product listed here was chosen because it performs better than the alternatives, not because it's cheaper. When you hire KD Drywall N Paint, these are the materials going into your home.

Drywall Taping Systems

Tape & Finishing Materials

Saint-Gobain ADFORS

FibaFuse® Paperless Drywall Tape

"FibaFuse® is the original paperless drywall tape. It is easy to install and creates stronger joints than paper tape. The porous design eliminates bubbles and blisters, allowing compound to flow through the tape for a stronger bond."

  • 76% stronger than standard paper tape
  • Open-fiber design eliminates blisters and bubbles
  • Thin profile for a smooth, professional finish
  • GREENGUARD Gold Certified
  • Ideal for mold-resistant drywall systems
Why we use it: Paper tape can blister and bubble when compound is applied too thin or in humid conditions. FibaFuse eliminates that failure point entirely — the compound flows through the tape and bonds directly to the drywall on both sides.

Saint-Gobain ADFORS

FibaFuse MAX Reinforced Tape

"FibaFuse MAX is an innovative, paperless drywall tape designed for professional renovators and remodelers. The blue reinforcement layer features a tri-directional construction that provides crack resistance in multiple directions and prevents accidental tearing of the tape on inside corners."

  • Blue reinforcement layer for maximum crack resistance
  • Tri-directional construction — resists cracking in all directions
  • Naturally mold and mildew resistant
  • GREENGUARD Gold Certified
  • Compatible with automatic taping tools
Why we use it: In high-stress areas — corners, transitions, water-damage repairs — we step up to FibaFuse MAX. The reinforced blue layer prevents the micro-cracking that shows up in finished walls years later.

ProForm Finishing Products

ProForm® Quick Set Lite™ Joint Compound

"ProForm® Quick Set Lite™ Setting Compound is a quick setting/hardening joint compound that is 30% lighter than conventional setting compound. It provides a lightweight, easy to sand finish for fast, smooth joint finishing, and is specially formulated to provide excellent joint strength, even in poor drying conditions."

  • 30% lighter than conventional setting compound
  • Sets by chemical reaction — not affected by humidity
  • Recoat immediately once previous coat sets
  • Reduces joint deformities such as ridging and beading
  • Excellent bond strength on all drywall surfaces
Why we use it: Pre-mixed compound dries by evaporation — humidity slows it down and causes shrinkage. Quick Set Lite hardens by chemical reaction, which means consistent results regardless of weather conditions and faster project completion.

Trim-Tex

Trim-Tex Fast Edge® Corner Bead

"Made of laminated paper over a vinyl core, Large Fast Edge Paper's patented mud locks keep the corner bead held firmly in place without the need for staples or adhesives, and its adjustable nose and wider legs allow it to conform to imperfect framing. This highly advanced bead gives you a quicker finish — while using the least amount of joint compound — over any other solution on the market."

  • Patented mud locks — no staples or adhesives needed
  • Adjustable nose conforms to imperfect framing
  • Requires less joint compound than standard bead
  • Faster installation with superior durability
  • Crisp, straight corners every time
Why we use it: Corners are the most visible part of any drywall job. Trim-Tex Fast Edge locks in place without fasteners, conforms to framing that isn't perfectly plumb, and requires less mud — which means less sanding and a cleaner result.

Primers & Sealers

Problem-Surface Primers

Rust-Oleum / Zinsser

Zinsser® Gardz® Problem Surface Sealer

"Lock down porous and crumbling surfaces with Rust-Oleum® Zinsser® GARDZ® Problem Surface Sealer. This low-odor, water-based formula dries to a clear, matte finish, creating a hard, paintable seal over damaged drywall, adhesive residues and other chalky surfaces."

  • Repairs torn paper on damaged drywall — eliminates bubbles
  • Seals skim coats, spackling, and old adhesive residue
  • Dries clear — doesn't change the surface appearance
  • Water-based, low odor, fast drying
  • Creates a hard, uniform base for paint
Why we use it: After water damage, the paper face of drywall often delaminates. Painting directly over it causes bubbling and peeling. Gardz penetrates and re-bonds the surface, creating a stable base that holds paint correctly.

Rust-Oleum / Zinsser

Zinsser® B-I-N® Shellac-Base Primer

"Looking for a 'silver bullet' primer that covers everything unwanted? Use the one contractors keep in their vans: Rust-Oleum® Zinsser® B-I-N® Primer. As the original, shellac-base primer-sealer, nothing is better at permanently blocking stains, odors and wood knots."

  • Permanently blocks severe water stains, smoke, and pet odors
  • Seals wood knots and sap streaks
  • Sticks to all surfaces without sanding
  • Recoat in 45 minutes — lightning-fast dry time
  • For interior and spot exterior use
Why we use it: Water stains and smoke damage bleed through latex primers — sometimes through multiple coats. B-I-N shellac creates a permanent barrier. It's the product we reach for when nothing else will hold the stain back.

Mold Remediation

Remediation Products

Fiberlock Technologies

Fiberlock ShockWave® Disinfectant & Cleaner

"ShockWave is an EPA-registered disinfectant, sanitizer and cleaner designed for use on various surfaces subject to microbial contamination, ideal for flooding and mold remediation. ShockWave is especially useful as an all-in-one product for treating wood framing, carpets, and other porous and nonporous surfaces as part of a complete mold remediation project."

  • EPA-registered fungicide, disinfectant, and sanitizer
  • Effective on both porous and non-porous surfaces
  • Over 130 organism kill claims
  • Registered for sewage and black water remediation
  • Effective in 98% soil load — works in real-world conditions
  • Concentrate formula — 1 gallon yields up to 64 gallons of solution
Why we use it: When water damage exposes wood framing to mold, the correct treatment is an EPA-registered fungicide — not bleach. Fiberlock ShockWave is specifically formulated for mold remediation on porous structural materials, including wood framing, where bleach is ineffective at the root level. It's the professional-grade product used by remediation contractors nationwide.

Finishing Equipment & Paint

Tools & Finish Coats

Festool USA

Festool PLANEX® Drywall Sander

"The new generation Festool PLANEX Drywall Sander revolutionizes drywall construction with its integrated LED light ring that reveals surface unevenness, and a random orbit sanding motion for perfect, groove-free finishes. Its adjustable suction power allows the sander to hold its own weight against walls and ceilings, significantly reducing strain on the user."

  • Integrated LED light ring reveals surface imperfections
  • Random orbit motion — no grooves or swirl marks
  • Adjustable suction holds sander against wall or ceiling
  • Nearly dust-free when paired with Festool dust extractor
  • Dramatically reduces airborne drywall dust in your home
Why we use it: Standard drywall sanding fills a home with fine dust that settles everywhere for days. The Festool PLANEX captures dust at the source, protects your home and our crew, and produces a flatter, more consistent surface than hand sanding. For smaller repairs and tight areas, we use Festool detail and random orbit sanders from the same system — the same dust-free approach, scaled to the job.

Sherwin-Williams

Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Interior Paint

"This acrylic latex paint offers exceptional washability and coverage with a formula that hides dark colors, resists water streaking, and helps prevent stains from penetrating. This interior paint and primer in one contains anti-microbial agents that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface."

  • Exceptional washability — stands up to scrubbing
  • Built-in primer — superior hide in fewer coats
  • Anti-microbial agents inhibit mold and mildew on the surface
  • Resists water streaking and stain penetration
  • Available in thousands of colors with consistent results
Why we use it: Budget paints require more coats to achieve coverage and show wear within a year. Sherwin-Williams Emerald is the top of the Sherwin line — it covers in fewer coats, holds color longer, and cleans without losing sheen.

Critical Information

Water Damage Repair
Done Right

Water damage is one of the most mishandled repairs in residential construction. Understanding the correct repair sequence protects your home's structure, air quality, and long-term value.

Critical Information

Why Proper Water Damage Repair Matters

Water damage is one of the most mishandled repairs in residential construction. What looks like a simple stain on the ceiling or a damp wall can conceal structural damage, compromised insulation, and active mold growth. Cutting corners on water damage repair doesn't save money — it defers a much larger problem.

⚠ Important: Do Not Use Bleach on Porous Surfaces

A common misconception is that bleach kills mold on wood framing, drywall, and other porous building materials. Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and OSHA explicitly state that bleach is not recommended as a routine practice during mold remediation. Bleach is approximately 97-99% water. On porous surfaces like wood framing, the chlorine evaporates at the surface while the water component penetrates deeper -- potentially feeding mold growth at the root level. Mold grows hyphae (roots) deep into porous materials that bleach cannot reach. On non-porous surfaces such as tile, glass, and sealed concrete, bleach is effective. On porous structural materials, an EPA-registered fungicide or biocide specifically formulated for that surface type is the correct treatment.

Step 01

Stop the Source

Call the appropriate licensed trade -- plumber for pipe leaks, roofer for roof leaks. The water source must be eliminated before any repair work begins.

Step 02

Dry the Structure

Professional drying equipment removes moisture from structural materials. Mold begins colonizing within 24-48 hours of water exposure -- time is critical. (Source: EPA)

Step 03

Remove Wet Materials

Saturated drywall cannot be dried in place reliably and must be removed. Wet fiberglass insulation loses its R-value, compresses, and must be replaced. Cellulose insulation retains water and promotes mold -- it cannot be salvaged once saturated.

Step 04

Treat Affected Framing

Any mold on wood framing must be treated with an EPA-registered fungicide or biocide appropriate for porous surfaces -- not bleach. Dead mold still causes allergic reactions and must be physically removed.

Step 05

Inspect Structural Elements

Wood framing begins to decay at approximately 20% moisture content. Floor joists, wall studs, sill plates, and subfloor sheathing must be inspected for rot. Metal fasteners corrode with persistent moisture, weakening structural connections.

Step 06

Restore and Finish

Install new insulation and drywall. Prime with a problem-surface sealer (such as Zinsser Gardz) to stabilize the surface. Apply stain-blocking primer (such as Zinsser B-I-N) over any remaining staining. Finish and paint.

Industry Knowledge

Hire the Right Trade
for the Right Job

Understanding which professional to call — and when — protects your home, your budget, and your safety.

Why It Matters

Specialization Exists for a Reason

The construction industry is built on specialization. Each trade requires years of dedicated training, specific tools, and a depth of knowledge that doesn't transfer cleanly across disciplines. A plumber understands pipe systems, water pressure, drainage slopes, and code requirements. An electrician understands load calculations, circuit protection, and electrical safety. A drywall contractor understands substrate preparation, compound chemistry, and finish quality. A tile setter understands substrate flatness, mortar selection, grout joints, and waterproofing systems.

In Delaware, state law requires specific professional licenses for electricians, plumbers, and HVAC contractors — all regulated through the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation. Other trades such as drywall, painting, tile, roofing, and carpentry are not required to hold a state trade license, but that doesn't mean skill level is equal across providers. Experience, training, proper tools, and a commitment to quality vary widely — and the results show in the finished work.

This page is a resource for homeowners who want to understand which professional to call for a given job, and why matching the right trade to the right task protects the quality, safety, and long-term value of the work.

🧱

Drywall Contractor

Drywall work is a finishing trade that requires understanding of substrate conditions, compound chemistry, and surface preparation. Poor drywall work is visible in every light condition — and nearly impossible to hide without starting over.

  • New construction hanging and finishing
  • Repair after water damage, plumbing, or electrical work
  • Skim coating and surface restoration
  • Popcorn ceiling removal and refinishing
  • Mold-damaged drywall replacement
🎨

Painting Contractor

Professional painters understand surface preparation, primer selection, sheen levels, and application techniques that produce a finish that lasts. Painting over unprepared or improperly primed surfaces leads to peeling, bubbling, and bleed-through within months.

  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Surface preparation and priming
  • Stain blocking over water damage
  • Color consultation and application
  • Deck staining and exterior wood finishing
🔧

Licensed Plumber

Plumbing work involves water pressure, drainage slopes, venting, and local code compliance. Improper plumbing repairs can result in hidden leaks, water damage inside walls, and health hazards from improper venting. In Delaware, plumbing contractors are required by state law to employ a licensed Master Plumber, regulated through the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation.

  • Pipe repair and replacement
  • Fixture installation and rough-in
  • Water heater installation
  • Drain and sewer line work
  • Code-required permits and inspections

Licensed Electrician

Electrical work is one of the most safety-critical trades in construction. Improper wiring causes house fires and electrocution. In Delaware, electrical contractors are required by state law to employ a licensed Master Electrician, regulated through the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation. All significant electrical work requires a licensed electrician and, in most jurisdictions, a permit and inspection.

  • Panel upgrades and circuit additions
  • Recessed lighting installation
  • Outlet and switch work
  • Ceiling fan and fixture installation
  • Code-required permits and inspections
🏠

Roofing Contractor

Roof work involves waterproofing systems, flashing, ventilation, and structural load considerations. A roof leak that isn't properly repaired at the source will continue to cause water damage inside the structure — often in ways that aren't visible until significant damage has occurred.

  • Shingle and membrane replacement
  • Flashing repair and replacement
  • Leak diagnosis and source repair
  • Ventilation and soffit work
  • Storm damage assessment and repair
🪵

Finish Carpenter

Carpentry encompasses trim work, millwork, cabinetry, and structural framing. Finish carpentry in particular requires precision cuts, understanding of wood movement, and an eye for detail that produces clean, tight joints at every transition.

  • Crown molding and base trim installation
  • Door and window casing
  • Built-in cabinetry and shelving
  • Wainscoting and board-and-batten
  • Structural framing and repair
🪟

Tile Setter

Tile installation is a highly skilled trade that goes far beyond placing tile. A professional tile setter understands substrate preparation, mortar and adhesive selection, waterproofing systems, grout joint sizing, and the critical importance of a flat, properly supported surface. Tile failures — cracking, debonding, and grout deterioration — are almost always the result of improper substrate prep or incorrect mortar selection, not the tile itself.

  • Floor and wall tile installation
  • Shower and wet area waterproofing systems
  • Substrate leveling and preparation
  • Large-format tile and natural stone installation
  • Grout selection, application, and sealing
  • Tile repair and replacement

Matching the Right Professional to the Right Job

Handymen are a legitimate and valuable part of the home services industry. For minor general repairs, maintenance tasks, and small jobs that don't require specialized expertise or permits, a skilled handyman is often the right call. The key is understanding where the line is — and what's at stake when a job crosses it.

When to Hire a Licensed Specialist

  • Any work that requires a permit or inspection
  • Electrical work beyond simple fixture swaps
  • Plumbing beyond basic fixture replacement
  • Structural repairs of any kind
  • Water damage repair involving mold or structural materials
  • Drywall work where finish quality is visible
  • Exterior painting on surfaces requiring proper prep and primer
  • Roofing and flashing work

Where a Handyman Is a Good Fit

  • Minor general repairs not requiring permits
  • Small patching jobs where finish quality is low-priority
  • Furniture assembly and installation of pre-made items
  • Caulking and weatherstripping
  • Door hardware replacement
  • Gutter cleaning and minor maintenance
  • Touch-up painting in low-visibility areas
The bottom line: Knowing which professional to call for a given job is one of the most valuable things a homeowner can understand. For straightforward maintenance and minor repairs, a handyman is a practical choice. For work that involves structural systems, licensed trades, visible finish quality, or code compliance, a specialist in that trade will consistently produce better results — and protect the long-term value of the home.
