Skip Trowel
1990s – Present · Mediterranean / Southwest Style

Handcrafted, irregular raised sections applied with a trowel at an angle over a wet mud bed. Creates a Mediterranean or Old World appearance. Common in higher-end homes and custom construction.

Approach: Skim coat over — knock down high spots, then skim. The irregular nature of skip trowel makes it more forgiving to skim over than crows foot or stipple.

Circular or arc patterns created with a brush in wet compound. Creates a decorative, patterned surface. Less common than other textures.

Wet scraping is the most effective and most widely used method for popcorn ceiling removal. It produces the cleanest surface, requires the least physical effort compared to sanding, and gives you the most control over the finish quality.

The Sprayer

Use a pump garden sprayer — the same type sold in the lawn and garden department at Home Depot, Lowe's, or Ace Hardware for Roundup and weed killer. Fill it with plain water.
