Rehoboth Beach was founded in 1873 as a Methodist camp meeting ground. The Reverend Robert W. Todd of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Wilmington organized the purchase of 414 acres of land to establish a seaside retreat for religious gatherings.
In 1878, a railroad line ran directly down what is now Rehoboth Avenue, bringing visitors from Wilmington, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. to the Delaware shore. The railroad was eventually removed, but Rehoboth Avenue remains the town's main street to this day.
