Bethany Beach was founded in July 1901 by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from the Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania areas — not as a resort town, but as a permanent seaside assembly ground for Christian churches across the country. The town's name was chosen through a nationwide contest won by H.L. Atkinson, who was awarded a beachfront lot as his prize. The first building was the Tabernacle, an octagonal auditorium 100 feet in diameter with brown shingles and a cupola on top, dedicated on July 12, 1901. It stood for sixty years before storms and termites finally claimed it.
The town was officially incorporated in 1909 and has retained its quiet, family-oriented character ever since. Bethany's founders described their vision as "a haven of rest for quiet people," and that phrase still captures something true about the town today. Unlike its neighbors to the north, Bethany has deliberately maintained its low-key identity — no large-scale commercial development, no nightlife strip, just the beach, the boardwalk, and the families who have been coming back to the same houses for generations.
Bethany Beach celebrated its centennial in 2001 with a series of events beginning on July 4th. The town covers just 1.16 square miles and has maintained its residential character through deliberate zoning decisions that have kept it distinct from the more commercially developed beach towns on either side.
